Musée Alfred Canel
À Pont-Audemer (Eure), le musée Alfred Canel accueille les visiteurs en tant que musée labellisé « Musée de France ». Concernant son passé, Le musée municipal a été constitué en 1876 pour « moraliser par l'instruction, charmer par les arts et enrichir par les sciences ».
En 1879, Alfred Canel lègue sa maison avec l'intégralité de sa collection, ainsi que des rentes, à la ville de Pont-Audemer. Dès 1834, il avait été à l'initiative de la création de la bibliothèque municipale.
En 1884, sa maison ouvre ses portes pour accueillir la bibliothèque municipale et le musée cantonal. L'espace reste aujourd'hui partagé entre le fonds ancien de la bibliothèque et le musée.
Le musée présente plusieurs atouts : Le fonds de la bibliothèque, de grande réputation, comporte 20.000 livres, documents et manuscrits dont une forte proportion concerne la Normandie. Ils sont répartis dans leurs meubles d'origine.
Le musée a pris l'apparence d'un cabinet de curiosités. Inondé de lumière zénithale, il présente des tableaux, le plus souvent de peintres régionaux, jusqu'à saturation. S'y mêlent coléoptères, herbiers, fossiles, céramiques et autres objets.
