Description
C’est à Ranson que l’on doit les surnoms caractéristiques donnés aux Nabis. Dans le groupe, Sérusier est le « Nabi à la barbe rutilante ».#Georges Lacombe est l’élève et l’ami de Sérusier, qui l’initie à la peinture de Gauguin et lui inculque le principe du synthétisme et du retour à l’art décoratif. Il lui enseigne aussi des recettes de peinture traditionnelles, comme la préparation à l’oeuf ou à la colle. Ce portrait est un bel exemple de peinture à l’oeuf réalisée dans l’esprit de Gauguin et de Sérusier.#Représenté tel un prophète, l’artiste paraît debout dans une barque voguant sur une mer rose irréelle. L’horizon est placé si haut qu’il disparaît du tableau, affecté d’une sorte d’instabilité. Les flots se brisent sur de sombres rochers et le personnage semble vouloir apaiser les éléments de ses doigts tendus.
