Le vaisseau Friedland fut lancé à Cherbourg le 4 avril 1840 depuis la cale n°4 de l'avant-port. Sa construction avait débuté en 1812. Les cales représentées ont été édifiées en 1821 (demande du baron Portal, en 1820, de construire 14 cales couvertes afin de mettre à l'abri les vaisseaux - 4 furent construites à Cherbourg).
