Huile sur papier marouflée sur toile ; Georges Clairin se voit confier en 1888 la totalité du décor peint du Grand Théâtre de Tours, qu’il fallait reconstruire après qu’un incendie l’ait ravagé en 1883.Cette esquisse présente un état de la réflexion de l’artiste, qui fera ensuite évoluer certains détails. A gauche, une Scène de théâtre au Moyen Âge évoque les origines populaires du spectacle. Au centre, sur fond de verdure, Le Cardinal du Bellay présentant François Rabelais à François Ier entouré de sa cour ; dans l’œuvre finale, les arbres seront réduits afin de laisser apparaître la silhouette du château d’Azay-le-Rideau. A droite enfin, les Célébrités tourangelles rassemblent l’écrivain romantique Alfred de Vigny, né à Loches, le grand médecin Trousseau, peut-être le céramiste Avisseau… Dans la version achevée figureront les trois gloires tourangelles de la médecine, Bretonneau, Trousseau et Velpeau, ainsi que le chansonnier Béranger, et surtout Balzac, dont l’imposante stature dominera la scène.
