Description
L'inscription peut être lue selon Mme Geneviève Simon-Khédis comme Léon, prénom de Léon Roches, interprète assermenté en 1835, qui rejoignit Abd-el-Kader après le traité de la Tafna, puis devint son secrétaire particulier et son conseiller sous le nom d'Omar jusqu'à la reprise des hostilités en 1839. Il l'abandonna alors pour rejoindre ses compatriotes et rédigea un mémoire qui prétend révéler les secrets de la défense de celui-ci. En 1841, Léon Roches convainquit Bugeaud de le laisser se rendre auprès des oulema (docteurs de la foi) de Kairouan afin d'obtenir une fatwa, décision religieuse qui inciterait les tribus à composer avec le conquérant français, mais dont l'existence a été mise en doute. Son long périple, qu'il accomplit vêtu à l'orientale, le mena à Tunis, à Kairouan, et enfin jusqu'à La Mecque. C'est encore Roches qui est à l'origine de la reprise des relations franco-marocaines et de la venue à Paris d'une délégation marocaine en décembre 1845. Intime de l'émir, dont il partagea parfois la tente, il donna de lui des descriptions saisissantes. On doit à Léon Roches deux ouvrages de souvenirs, Dix ans à travers l'Islam, 1834-1844, Paris, 1904, et Trente-deux ans en terre d'Islam (1832-1864), Paris, 1884-1885.
