Description
En 1940, celui que l’on surnomme le prince de Montparnasse, Moïse Kisling, peintre emblématique de l’Ecole de Paris, est contraint à l’exil du fait de ses origines juives.#Il rejoint le sud de la France et embarque à Marseille en septembre 1940 pour rejoindre le Portugal. Il séjournera six mois, chez son beau-frère, le peintre Adriano de Sousa Lopes, à Lisbonne et à Nazaré. Au début de l’année 1941, il gagne les États-Unis où il résidera, principalement à New York, jusqu’à son retour en France en octobre 1946.#Sa femme Renée reste en France avec leurs enfants. Il ne cessera de lui écrire pendant toute cette période d’exil.#Ces lettres constituent le cœur de cette correspondance d’exil. Leur lecture permet d’appréhender les joies et les peines du peintre durant cette période à la fois tragique et exaltante, de connaître ses conditions de vie, de découvrir les artistes et intellectuels qu’il rencontre ou avec lesquels il correspond, de suivre ses activités artistiques, son travail d’atelier quotidien et ses expositions aux États-Unis.#Lettre adressée à son fils Guy, écrite à Paris le 25 octobre 1930.
