Nantes, 1811; L'Isle-Adam, 1889 ; Initié très tôt à l'art du décor sur céramique. Elève du peintre paysagiste Jean-Marie Diébolt. Expose pour la première fois au Salon de 1831. Obtient une médaille de seconde classe comme peintre de genre au Salon de 1833. Participe avec de nombreux autres peintres à l'Ecole de Crozant dans les vallées creusoises. Fréquente Barbizon avec Théodore Rousseau. Selon Vincent Van Gogh qui ne cesse de l'associer à Victor Hugo, Jules Dupré incarne l'âme du Romantisme à la française
