Le fonds du musée s'enrichit grâce à des acquisitions d'objets d'ethnographie régionale et d'objets provenant de fouilles archéologiques. Collections archéologiques et arts et traditions dès 1965. Seconde phase des collections archéologiques dès 1976.
Déménagement du musée dans le bâtiment actuel en 1938-1940. L'intérêt de ce musée tient à : Maison de ville, avec jardin, des abbés commendataires de Noirlac, datant du XIIIe siècle, remaniée au XVIe siècle. Couvent de femmes puis maison d'arrêt de Saint-Amand de la Révolution à 1934.
