Creusant encore, il découvre l’entrée d’un abri sous roche, contenant une sépulture collective et des restes d’animaux éteints. 1860 : fouille de l'abri d'Aurignac par Edouard Lartet. 1906 : après un ardent débat scientifique, Aurignac donne son nom devenant éponyme de l’Aurignacien. 1969 : la renommée internationale de l'Aurignacien entraîne la création du musée. 2006 : projet de création d'un nouveau musée forum.
Une construction neuve est édifiée. 2015 : inauguration du nouveau musée située à l'entrée sud de la ville, à la muséographie moderne et didactique. Son intérêt réside dans : Bâtiment d'architecte avec toiture terrasse végétalisée.
