Description
Hoyer ne put voir, en 1784, sans s’y intéresser vivement, la terrible inondation qui submergeait la ville et ses alentours ; il peignit alors cette scène. L’abbaye occupe le milieu du tableau ; à gauche se trouvent quelques chaumières ; à droite, sont des rochers ruisselants et des arbres dépouillés ; dans le fond apparaissent les montagnes de Crouy et Bucy ; les eaux entourent le monastère et baignent ses murs d’enceinte ; quatre barques sont soulevées par elles ; six ou sept religieuses, penchées sur un mur, reçoivent des provisions de braves gens qui sont dans ces barques. Au premier plan, à gauche, une nacelle arrive portant cinq personnages dont l’un, le lieutenant de police Brayer sans doute, désigne de la main gauche l’abbaye noyée.
