Description
Fonte en bronze, patine noire ; À la fin des années trente, Stahly a partagé avec les artistes du groupe "Témoignage" une approche spiritualiste et anti-formaliste de l'art. Dans ses premières oeuvres, il s'inspire de la vie agissante des éléments d'une part, des formes archaïques du féminin de l'autre. C'est dans ce contexte qu'il crée vers 1942 une première version en bois de cette œuvre. Son premier collectionneur l'intitule "Vénus hottentotte", par rapprochement avec les formes hypertrophiées de la poitrine et du bassin des femmes de cette ethnie sud-africaine et avec les représentations féminines du paléolithique. L'œuvre fut traduite dans le marbre en plus grande dimension en 1958 puis coulée en bronze en 1974. Ce retour en arrière alors que le sculpteur avait depuis longtemps quitté l'inspiration maternelle et végétale, témoigne d'un rapport intime avec cette pièce.
