Description
Objet hédoniste, la pipe se prête parfaitement à la caricature et aux imageries grotesques, où sirènes et naïades côtoient faunes, démons et amours. Les compagnons d'Ulysse, dans l'Odyssée d'Homère, en sont les victimes : charmés par les chants des sirènes, ils abandonnent leur navire pour se perdre dans les profondeurs de la mer. C'est pourquoi, cette présence féminine, quoique fantastique, n'est pas exempte d'une prétention moralisatrice appelant à se méfier des apparences. L'imagerie populaire hollandaise a associé la pipe à la grivoiserie masculine des tavernes mais, dans les mains d'une femme, elle devient un objet subversif.
