Fils unique et élève des artistes Marie et Jean-Charles Cazin, Michel Cazin obtient, au Salon de 1888, une mention honorable dans la catégorie dessin et gravure.#Il réalise de nombreux portraits de pêcheurs du Nord en utilisant ces techniques.#Dans cette œuvre, Michel Cazin emploie la technique de l'eau-forte pour dresser le portrait d'un jeune homme barbu. Représenté en buste de trois-quarts, le jeune homme porte un béret et une blouse.#Un dessin préparatoire à cette œuvre, réalisé au crayon et à la sanguine, se trouve au dos d'une autre étude conservée au musée (Bormes, MHAB, 2013.0.7).
