Description
Au premier plan, Silène sommeillant, assis sur un rocher, cheveux crépus et barbe ondulée, torse découvert, une tunique rouge drapée, fixée à l'épaule gauche, tient de la main droite une amphore. A ses pieds repose une thyrse. Près de lui, Eglé, jeune femme blonde vêtue d'un himation, à demi-dénudée, lui macule de mûres le front. Au deuxième plan, au centre, un jeune homme couronné de pampres et à demi-vêtu d'une tunique verte, accoudé sur son bras droit, tient de la main gauche une guirlande de feuilles de vigne. A côté de lui, un berger vêtu d'une peau, la tête dans sa main droite, tient un bâton recourbé de pasteur. En arrière-plan de cette scène mythologique, des arbres et quelques rochers. Les deux personnages principaux, le satyre Silène et la nymphe Eglé sont au centre de cette composition pyramidale. Eglé barbouille de mûres le front de Silène qui, ivre de vin, s'est endormi et dont le corps est totalement relâché. ; L'?uvre représente, d'une façon exhaustive, les attributs de Silène : thyrse, tambourin, lierre et vigne, vase à vin. ; ; Il s'agit d'un sujet inspiré de la mythologie grecque, relaté dans les églogues du poète latin Virgile. Dans sa sixième églogue (petit poème pastoral), Virgile décrit le vieux Silène surpris pendant son sommeil par des bergers qui l'enchaînent, et il est maculé de mûres par la jeune Eglé. ; ; Cette scène a été peinte par Antoine Coypel, par Bouchot (envoi de Rome, 1830), Dassy (Salon de 1841), Alfred Foulongne (Salon de 1864) et Robin (Salon de 1870).
