Description
Étude pour trois lancettes trilobées et cinq ajours au tympan, réalisée à l'encre, lavis et rehauts de gouache orange ; L'ajour sommital et central représente Dieu coiffé d'une tiare, faisant le signe de la bénédiction de sa main droite et tenant un globe dans sa main gauche. Les deux autres ajours principaux représentent saint Vaast et un ours qu'il somme de partir. Dans le registre inférieur, les trois lancettes racontent un épisode de la légende de saint Vaast. Arrivant à la porte d'Arras, le saint rencontre deux mendiants (un boiteux et un aveugle) qui lui demandent l'aumône (le dessin n'en représente qu'un). Saint Vaast prie pour eux et ils sont guéris. Lancette gauche : un mendiant accompagné d'un chien se tient près du saint, dans une posture suppliante. En arrière plan, des guerriers à cheval s'approchent. Lancette centrale : saint Vaast sur son cheval se tourne vers le mendiant et approche de la tête de celui-ci sa main droite, dans un geste de bénédiction. Lancette droite : un personnage couronné et à cheval (certainement Clovis) semble vouloir marquer l'arrêt par un geste de sa main gauche. A ses côtés marche un guerrier portant lance et bouclier. Un chien les précède.
