Description
En 1892, Jan Verkade séjourne en Bretagne et va se convertir au catholicisme. Pour la première fois, il aborde dans sa peinture un thème religieux et tente de concilier son penchant artistique pour le synthétisme avec sa quête de plénitude spirituelle. Il s’agit d’un tournant dans sa vie et dans son oeuvre, puisqu’il entre peu après dans un monastère et se tourne alors vers la décoration religieuse.#Loin des représentations habituelles du martyre de saint Sébastien, l’artiste s’inspire de son entourage et des paysages familiers du Pouldu. Par la simplicité du style, le jeu de couleurs restreint, la prépondérance des aplats et les cernes cloisonnistes, Verkade rejoint ses amis de Pont-Aven et du groupe des Nabis. Le jeune Breton qu’il peint ne semble pas dérangé par les flèches qui le transpercent dans sa contemplation rêveuse d’un invisible au-delà. L’expression paisible qui se lit sur son visage renvoie à une foi dans une autre vie.#
