Il se distingue du siècle précédent en épurant la composition. Moins de décors, des couleurs vives et un seul personnage constituent le fondement de son œuvre. Quand il décrit son travail, Cappiello souligne que l’affiche « doit être avant tout et toujours une expression graphique, elle doit être comme un acte d’autorité sur le passant distrait ». Selon lui, « L’affiche est l’art décoratif de la rue ».
