Ami de Van Rysselberghe, Maurice Denis lui demande un portrait de son épouse Marthe. Pour ce tableau, Marthe pose chez elle, durant l’été 1907, en robe claire ornée de dentelles. Elle tourne le dos à la fenêtre et à un miroir qui reflète sa nuque et des tableaux accrochés au mur.#Insatisfait de son oeuvre, Van Rysselberghe peindra quelques mois plus tard, dans son atelier cette fois, un second portrait d’elle, dans une composition resserrée et des tons plus contrastés.#
