Ce portrait d'Elisabeth Graterolle, dite Lisbeth, est réalisé en septembre 1921, au moment où le peintre s'engage auprès d'elle, peu avant leur mariage en 1922. Le tableau est accompagné d'une citation de Dante se rapportant à Béatrice : « m'illuminant d'un tel sourire qu'il rendrait un homme heureux, même s'il se trouvait dans le feu ».Le sourire rayonnant, le regard chaleureux, la figure pleine de vie et de sérénité de Lisbeth apparaissent comme une invitation au bonheur tandis que la présence discrète de lunettes fait allusion à sa grande culture, à la fois musicale et littéraire.
