Ce portrait de Fanny, sœur de l'artiste, est à rapprocher de quelques portraits qu'Istres Contencin a réalisés des femmes de sa famille, notamment celui de son autre sœur Emma. Il s'agit de portraits de type académique suivant la tradition des portraits classiques largement influencée par Ingres. Fanny Contencin, vêtue d'une robe noire en soie et d'un corsage en dentelle au fuseau se détache sur un fond neutre. Elle porte un bijou de type provençal : une croix en jais s'inspirant de la forme Maintenon (fin du XVIIe siècle), mais sans le coulant traditionnel. Les boucles d'oreilles (dormeuses à breloque), la bague à la main gauche et la broche de corsage en or pavé de jais témoignent, comme la croix pendentif, de la production des bijoux de deuil en Provence au XIXe siècle. Le beau bracelet d'or en ruban rappelle par son nœud stylisé l'attachement à une personne. Le halo lumineux permet de souligner le modelé des traits de son visage. La dentelle noire du corsage, si bien représentée par le peintre, contraste avec la peau nue et claire du modèle qui dévoile le réseau en point d'esprit. Le châle bayadère en soie beige rayé de vert, assorti à l'éventail en corne ou en ivoire, apporte une touche colorée à ce portrait austère (de circonstance) d'une femme portant le deuil.
