Sous un éclairage subtil, les objets du décor, la robe, et surtout le visage d’Alice Sèthe semblent naître d’un savant brouillard. Ce portrait est le premier pour lequel Théo Van Rysselberghe applique la technique néo-impressionniste, découverte en 1886 avec le tableau de Seurat Un dimanche après-midi à la Grande Jatte et qu’il a peu à peu adoptée.#Le procédé divisionniste (ou pointilliste) juxtapose sur la toile de petites touches de tons purs. Ainsi le mélange des couleurs ne s’opère-t-il plus sur la palette du peintre mais dans l’oeil du spectateur. Cette précision scientifique n’exclut nullement la recherche de vérité intérieure et de ressemblance avec le modèle. Théo Van Rysselberghe demeure l’un des rares artistes qui ont mis cette technique au service du portrait.
