Entre l'édition du roman Paul et Virginie de 1789 et 1806, Schall a peint deux séries d'illustrations. Celle-ci, gravée par Charles Melchior Descourtis, est composée de six scènes : la grâce de l'esclave ; Paul et Virginie retrouvés par Domingue ; la visite de M. de La Bourdonnais ; les adieux et le départ de Virginie ; la mort de Virginie et la prière.
