Description
Au premier plan Orphée, reconnaissable à sa lyre, se présente devant le roi des Enfers, Hadès, et son épouse Perséphone dans l'espoir de repartir avec sa bien-aimée, Eurydice. A ses pieds Cerbère, l'effrayant chien à trois têtes, gardien du monde souterrain, l'a laissé passer, hypnotisé par la douce mélodie de son instrument et de ses chants. Derrière on aperçoit Ixion, qui pour avoir tenté de séduire Héra est condamné à être enchaîné par des serpents à une roue. Sisyphe, que l'on reconnait en bas à gauche, semble prendre un peu de repos sur la pierre qui est pourtant l'objet de son supplice. Les trois jeunes femmes portant des cruches ne sont autres que les Danaïdes, qui, après avoir massacré leurs maris, doivent remplir d'eau un tonneau percé.
