Huile sur toile. ; La princesse de Lamballe était la belle-fille du duc de Bourbon - Penthièvre, grand amiral de France et dernier seigneur de Vernon, châtelain d'Anet, Dreux, Sceaux, Rambouillet et Bizy à Vernon. L'étude représente une scène de rue avec un attroupement de personnes hommes et femmes, ouvriers, etc, entourant le corps dénudé d'une jeune femme tombée à terre, la tête en sang. Tandis qu'une femme du peuple en tablier et portant sabots regarde , les deux poings sur les hanches, une autre vêtue de même propose (?) de recouvrir le corps avec une étoffe verte. Cette étude est plus enlevée que la composition définitive plus statique où on note la présence d'un jeune garçon et une attitude différente de la femme à l'étoffe.
