Description
calcaire gravé ; Les inscriptions sont des salutations qui s'adressent à un défunt et sont gravées au-dessous de la corniche d'un important monument funéraire qui n'a pas été trouvé. Elles se développent sur deux lignes. Elles sont gravées sur une frise (à l'angle gauche), surmontée d'une corniche à moulures simples, qui règne sur trois faces de la pierre. Il existe, au niveau de la surface supérieure de cette pierre, l'ouverture d'une cavité carrée accompagnée, à droite et à gauche, de deux autres cavités moins profondes et communiquant avec la première. Il s'agissait certainement de l'endroit où étaient déposées les urnes contenant les cendres du défunt, ainsi que quelques objets. Les acclamations ici gravées, 'have et vale' suivies de 'aphoni', semblent précéder une épitaphe qui manque, et paraissent adresser au passant la recommandation de ne pas troubler, par la parole, le silence du tombeau. Le vocatif 'aphoni' semble ici être une épithète signifiant muet, aphone, que le défunt adresse au passant. (d'après G. Julliot).
