Description

Cet objet constituait l’un des éléments de décor d’une grande situle, un récipient en bronze, qui était ornée aux bases de son anse avec des masques dionysiaques dont un seul a échappé au pillage de l’épave. L’applique de situle représente un Silène, personnage mythologique appartenant au cortège dionysiaque. Habituellement représenté sous les traits d’un vieillard, Silène est ici couronné de feuilles de lierre et de grappes de raisin tandis qu’un bandeau ceint la base de son front. Ses yeux sont grands, allongés et sa barbe, savamment ordonnée, est symétrique. La tête est surmontée d’un tenon sur lequel devait être soudé le support de l’anneau d’attache d’anse. Des incrustations de cuivre rouge soulignent certaines parties du visage du personnage (lèvres, bandeau et paupières).
