France Ranson accueillait régulièrement les amis peintres de son époux Paul Ranson dans son atelier parisien, boulevard du Montparnasse. Pour ce portrait de la maîtresse de maison, Maurice Denis fait de nombreux emprunts à l’art japonais : un format vertical étroit, l’absence de modelé qui laisse place à un traitement graphique de la ligne, ou encore les motifs ondoyants qui vont de la robe au papier peint et jusqu’au pelage du chat.La « déformation subjective » permet à l’artiste d’allonger la jupe de la jeune femme et de lui faire un tout petit pied.
