Bonnard nous laisse deviner ici le visage de sa grand-mère maternelle, Mme Frédéric Metzdorff (1812-1900). Elle l’héberge dans son appartement à Paris en 1889 alors qu’il est étudiant et lui sert souvent de modèle dans les années qui suivent.#Cette vieille dame, pilier de la famille, est une forte personnalité. Bonnard en livre un portrait modeste et subtilement mélancolique où il peint avec tendresse l’âme de cet être qui lui est cher. À travers elle, il évoque la vieillesse solitaire, un monde fané aux couleurs passées, aux formes tremblées, un univers où le personnage se confond avec son environnement. Dans cette oeuvre essentiellement intuitive, Bonnard n’impose rien, il suggère.
