Pâte de verre blanche transparente, type P8 ; 'Pastille de verre transparent; personnage debout devant une femme drapée portant l'un et l'autre la main sur une tige à trois fleurs; derrière une suivante accompagnée d'un enfant.' Inventaire I. C., Bulliot, p. 275 ; 'A gauche, un personnage masculin entièrement nu, la jambe gauche croisée derrière la droite, tend un bouquet de trois plantes à une femme, vêtue d'une grande draperie, en mouvement, qui les prend de sa main droite; elle tient déjà des fleurs semblables dans sa main gauche, baissée au sol. Derrière elle, se trouve un groupe de trois personnages moins lisible en raison de la cassure de l'intaille: le premier est légèrement penché, les deux autres sont à terre. Ligne de sol. Il s'agit d'un épisode assez rare dans la glyptique, Hypnos distribuant ses pavots. Hypnos, le Sommeil, fils de la Nuit et frère de la Mort, est une abstraction pure, qui appartient davantage à la poésie et à l'art plutôt qu'un culte. La scène figurée sur cette intaille doit reprendre un tableau célèbre. Le Sommeil, offre des pavots, plante narcotique dont les Anciens connaissaient les propriétés, mélangeant ses racines à de la farine pour confectionner des gâteaux. Cette plante apparaît à plusieurs reprises dans la poésie grecque et latine. Ainsi, chez Virgile, 'les pavots imprégnés du sommeil léthéen' (Géorgiques, I, 78) ou encore cette magicienne, 'répandant la liqueur du miel et le pavot qui apporte sommeil' (Enéide, IV, 486). Dans l'autre main, l'objet indéterminé pourrait être une coupe avec un liquide assoupissant, ou encore une draperie maladroitement exécutée.' Vitrum, 1990, pp. 107-108, n° 82
