Il fut un graveur de reproduction d'oeuvres d'art réputé au XIXe siècle, travaillant notamment pour La Gazette des Beaux-Arts fondée par Charles Blanc en 1859. Flameng est toutefois ici l'auteur du dessin, gravé par Adolphe François Pannemacker. Ce dernier fit beaucoup de gravures sur bois qui servirent à l'illustration d'ouvrages ; il fut notamment l'un des graveurs favoris de Gustave Doré.
