Description

À son retour de la guerre de 1914, où il a perdu un fils, Desvallières fait le voeu de se consacrer exclusivement à la peinture religieuse et fonde en 1919 avec Maurice Denis les Ateliers d’art sacré, qui vont oeuvrer pour le renouveau de l’art dans les églises. Le Sacré-Coeur représente la figure douloureuse du Christ penchée au-dessus des couleurs tricolores et des dates du conflit. Dans cette image puissante, le corps torturé du Sauveur rappelle ses souffrances et évoque l’horreur de la guerre. À l’arrière-plan, la silhouette de la basilique du Sacré-Coeur à Paris et le profil d’une colonne à l’antique font allusion au rôle de médiation de l’Église entre Dieu et les hommes.
