Description

Elle est datée avec vraisemblance vers 1875 dans le catalogue du musée de la Société du Familistère, qui désigne le groupe comme « Le personnel de la fonderie ». Le groupe n’est pas pourvu de ses attributs, les outils de travail des ouvriers, qui, sur les portraits collectifs postérieurs, permettent d’identifier l’activité de l’atelier. Les codes de la représentation sont, cependant, comparables à ceux des images de la fin du XIXe siècle : les travailleurs posent en vêtement de travail ; ils se tiennent en rangs serrés, étagés devant la façade en briques d’un atelier de l’usine ; les plus jeunes sont assis au sol au premier rang ; mélangés aux ouvriers se trouvent les surveillants de l’atelier, reconnaissables à la chaîne de montre qu’ils portent à la boutonnière de leur gilet. Si quelques-uns adoptent une gestuelle distinctive, exhibent un accessoire original ou introduisent un petit désordre qui exprime leur camaraderie, la plupart posent les bras croisés en prenant l’air grave que l’on attend des travailleurs de l’industrie.
