Description
Au début de sa carrière, H. Rivière travaille comme metteur en scène au Théâtre du Chat Noir avant de se consacrer pleinement au dessin et à la gravure. Il réalise de nombreuses estampes inspirées des paysages bretons et parisiens, dans un style japonisant. À partir de 1916, il abandonne la technique de l'estampe au profit de l'aquarelle et entreprend plusieurs voyages en France, notamment en Provence. Entre 1924 et 1925, H. Rivière séjourne à deux reprises à Bormes-les-Mimosas. Lors de ces séjours, il peint les paysages environnants ainsi que les monuments emblématiques de Bormes, comme la chapelle Saint-François, qu'il choisit comme sujet de prédilection. Il lui consacre une dizaine d'aquarelles.#Dans l'œuvre ci-contre, Henri Rivière choisit de représenter la chapelle Saint-François orientée plein nord. La chapelle est dessinée de trois-quarts, permettant d'admirer sa façade tout en mettant en valeur la végétation méditerranéenne environnante. Au loin, on aperçoit les ruines d’un ancien moulin. H. Rivière utilise une large palette de verts pour traiter la végétation et choisit des tons ocres et orangés pour le bâtiment.
