A la fin du XVIIIe siècle, l'habitation Desbassayns, plantation située à l'ouest de l'île, sur la commune de Saint-Paul, fut l'une des plus grandes propriétés coloniales de l'île Bourbon. Durant quarante ans (1800-1846), le domaine fut administré par une figure incontournable de l'histoire réunionnaise, Marie Anne Thérèse Ombline Panon-Desbassayns (1755-1846). En 1845, 295 esclaves, commandeurs, domestiques, ' Noirs de pioches ' et ' à talent ' étaient attachés à la propriété dont la prospérité reposait sur la culture de la canne à sucre. Sur cette lithographie, on distingue d'ailleurs la cheminée fumante de l'usine. Depuis 1974, le Musée Historique de Villèle est installé dans l'ancienne habitation Desbassayns. Outre l'intérêt historique et documentaire de cette lithographie qui restitue le contexte architectural et paysager de cette plantation, l'image montre à l'évidence à quel point le site est resté authentique malgré les transformations opérées au fil du temps. Même si les deux varangues superposées ont disparu de la façade orientale de la maison de maître, celle-ci offre toujours cette même élégance avec son architecture inspirée des grandes demeures de Pondichéry. Le musée historique de Villèle conserve deux versions différentes de cette lithographie produites respectivement en 1847, 1861 et 1883. Les deux esclaves, placés au centre de l'estampe parue en 1847, font place à une charmante dame portant ombrelle et crinoline, dans la seconde version éditée durant la second moitié du XIXe siècle.
