Encadré. Morghen dès son jeune âge avait des dispositions extraordinaires pour la gravure au burin et à l'eau-forte. Il reproduisit tous les grands maîtres italiens ainsi que des interprétations de Pétrarque et de Laure. A son époque, il fut considéré comme l'un des plus grands graveurs ayant existé. Bernardi continua sa manière. C'est le portrait du Musée des Offices qui a servi de référence. Le Pince d'Essling le mentionne dans son ouvrage (p.69). Cette gravure est caractéristique d'une série que l'on pourrait intituler "Pétrarque à la pèlerine". Pétrarque y est représenté de face, la tête abondamment laurée. Le capuchon, resserré au cou, forme une collerette sur les épaules, ouverte par devant. Une gravure italienne de 1761, exécutée par Francesco Allegrini d'après un dessin de Cosimo Fioravanti, pourrait inaugurer la série. Cette gravure porte l'indication "Covato da un quadro in tavola appresso il Signore Domenoco Ma Manni" ainsi qu'un écusson aux armes d'une cité italienne (Florence). Rafaël Morghen introduit des variantes avec un livre dans la main de Pétrarque comme c'est le cas dans une édition des Rimes publiée à Londres en 1822 par C. Pickering ou dans une gravure qu'il réalisa à Florence d'après un dessin de Stefano Tofannelli (1752-1812, il exécuta de nombreux dessins à partir des oeuvres des grands maîtres pour les plus célèbres graveurs de son temps).
