Jean Charles Cazin est un peintre, graveur et céramiste français, formé à l'École impériale de dessin à Paris en 1862. À partir de 1876, ses œuvres, principalement composées de peintures de paysages et d'histoire, sont régulièrement exposées dans les salons parisiens. L’œuvre ci-contre est quant à elle une étude pour le tableau L'Ours et l'Amateur des jardins, réalisée en 1882 pour la salle à manger de la Sorbonne. Elle représente un passage de la fable du même nom. Écrite par Jean de La Fontaine, la fable raconte l'amitié d'un ours et d'un vieillard. Elle met en garde contre les dangers des compagnons imprudents et souligne qu'un sage ennemi vaut mieux qu'un ami incompétent. Dans son tableau, J-C Cazin choisit de représenter au premier plan le vieillard endormi sur une pierre dans un jardin potager. En arrière-plan, se trouve un verger avec une vieille maison en pierre, surplombée par des collines au loin. Installé depuis 1891 à Bormes, puis au Lavandou, J-C Cazin s'inspire des paysages du Sud pour le décor de son œuvre, et notamment des puits à Saint-Clair au Lavandou.
