Description
La plus longue inscription latine du musée est tardive, certainement du IVe siècle. Elle était remployée dans un mur de l'église médiévale de Valentine (Haute-Garonne) lorsqu'elle fut acquise pour le Musée de Toulouse, en 1835, par l'entremise de la Société archéologique du Midi de la France. Réutilisée en table d'autel, comme le prouvent cinq croix de consécration, cette épitaphe est composée de douze distiques élégiaques dont Jean-Marie Pailler a donné une nouvelle traduction et une fine analyse en 1986. Ils ont été rédigés à la gloire de Nymfius, haut dignitaire dont la fonction ne peut être déterminée. Cependant, son action publique, son évergétisme, lui valurent les éloges de toute une province (la Novempopulanie?) heureuse de ses bienfaits. Assurément très riche, puisqu'il offrit de vibrants spectacles à ses contemporains, il fut peut-être le maître de la magnifique villa fouillée par Georges Fouet à Valentine. Son épouse Serena lui avait dédié ce texte poétique, qui ne dut être que l'un des éléments d'un splendide monument funéraire. Nymfius, dont l'"âme pieuse goûte aux joies du ciel" et Serena, qui "attend la lumière éternelle", ont parfois été considérés comme des chrétiens. ce ne fut probablement pas le cas, sauf peut-être pour Serena. Au-delà de ces considérations eschatologiques et de l'hommage civique, ces vers n'en dépeignent pas moins un couple uni et une veuve affligée par la perte de son époux.
