Ce tableau est entré dans les collections du musée à l'occasion de son ouverture au public en 1833. Il fait vraisemblablement partie des œuvres alors prêtées par des collectionneurs privés afin d'étoffer la jeune collection. Jacques Gamelin, peintre audois, né et mort à Carcassonne, révèle ici, dans le choix de sa composition, une influence probable de Hyacinthe Rigaud qui avait peint, pour sa mère Maria Serra, le même sujet. Le Christ expirant sur la Croix de Rigaud était également redécouvert en 1833, dans les combles de l'hôtel de ville de Perpignan où il se trouvait alors. Le tableau avait fait l'objet des saisies révolutionnaires de 1790, tandis qu'en 1722, à la mort de sa mère, Hyacinthe Rigaud en avait fait don au couvent des Dominicains de Perpignan pour en décorer la sacristie. Il est probable qu'en 1833, le premier musée Rigaud ait ainsi présenté ces deux œuvres et soulevé cette connivence picturale dès cette époque.
