Description
Terre cuite peinte ; Contrairement au cheval, en usage depuis très longtemps en Chine, le chameau est le signe des voyages et des échanges. Il est donc un symbole de luxe. C'est probablement à ce titre que de tels substituts funéraires (mingqi) à leur image accompagnaient les riches défunts dans leur dernière demeure, comme pour affirmer leur rang même après leur mort. Cette oeuvre a été réalisée en terre sombre riche en fer. Elle a été moulée. Certains détails ont ensuite été repris à l'aide d'une spatule, certains autres motifs sont incisés. Cette statuette porte des traces de polychromie rouge et d'engobe blanc. La figure est remarquable par l'impression de vie qui en émane : l'animal semble prêt à reprendre sa course. (D. Galloy)
