Œuvre de format rectangulaire sur laquelle apparaît, à senestre, des personnages regroupés près d'un point d'ombre. A dextre, au loin, un bateau vogue sur une mer calme bordée de rochers. Les personnages sont brossés rapidement. Quelques taches de couleur suffisent à les figurer. Le thème du campement est récurrent dans les peintures de Ziem. Il fait partie de ces sujets chers aux orientalistes. L'artiste fait un seul voyage en Algérie, en 1858. C'est le genre de scène qui l'a marqué durablement. On en retrouve dans de nombreuses compositions plus grandes telles que MZP 993.1.4930.
