Description
Dans une lettre de mars 1940, Gaston Gayon demanda à Luce par l'intermédiaire de Charles Baillet ( un peintre de la Société des indépendants, ami de Luce et de l'anarchiste Eugène Givort), le tableau des "Baigneurs" qu'il acheta donc alors. La toile qui avait été exposée au Salon des indépendants, fut répertoriée en 1986 dans le catalogue de l'oeuvre peint de Luce établi par son petit-neveu, Jean Bouin-Luce, et Denise Bazetoux (au n° 2663). Luce peignit beaucoup de sujets pris sur les bords de Seine, en lien avec les baigneurs de Seurat dans la fameuse "Ile de la Grande jatte".

Cet artiste "engagé", soucieux des hommes de son temps et dont la peinture affirme les convictions politiques, collabora également à plusieurs revues anarchistes et exécuté des dessins et caricatures pour de nombreux journaux de combat, tels Le Père Peinard ou La Révolte..
