Graveur puis peintre, militant libertaire, Maximilien Luce est l’un des fondateurs du néo-impressionnisme. Pendant longtemps, il s’attachera, suivant le principe du mélange optique, à traduire la forme dans la lumière au moyen des tons divisés, avant de revenir, au début du XXe siècle, à une facture plus classique.#Dans ce tableau peint vers 1910, il choisit de se représenter dans une attitude familière, loin de la pose « classique » des artistes qui aiment se figurer avec pinceau, palette et chevalet. Son autoportrait reste empreint de dignité malgré la simplicité de la tenue.#
