Description
Denis, comme Gauguin et les artistes de l’Ecole de Pont-Aven, s’essaie à la technique du bois sculpté dans ce rare voire unique bois polychrome. Les contraintes du bas-relief le poussent à simplifier la forme, plus encore que dans le tableau qu’il peint sur le même sujet. Cette oeuvre évoque la destinée de « Jeanne la Douce », qui avait déjà donné ses traits à La Vierge dans Le Mystère catholique, une jeune fille touchée par la grâce divine, représentée comme une apparition voilée de blanc devant un crucifix, contrastant avec deux silhouettes sombres de femmes en tenue de ville priant à l’église.
