Description
Ces deux bas-reliefs (avec "Homère" (inv. 84.7.1)), qui constituent des pendants, ont été exécutés par Pajou à la demande du roi Louis XV afin d’orner la salle à manger du château de Bellevue à Meudon, qui appartenait à Madame de Pompadour puis à Mesdames, filles de Louis XV et aujourd’hui disparu. À travers la représentation héroïque des deux poètes, le sculpteur renoue avec la thématique antique et s’inscrit dans le courant néo-classique. Sur les deux terres cuites a été effectuée une mise au carreau avec mention des mesures en pieds, incisée sur Anacréon. ##Anacréon est assis de trois-quart, le torse nu, les jambes couvertes d'un vêtement. Il est entouré d'attributs dionysiaques (thyrse, amphore). De la main droite, il lève une coupe devant l'Amour jouant de la lyre pour accompagner son ode et, de l'autre main, il tient un morceau de parchemin. En 1750, Pajou avait déjà présenté à Louis XV un groupe représentant "Anacréon et l'Amour", témoignage de sa jeune érudition. Le sujet le tenta de nouveau quelques années plus tard. Anacréon est proche d'un bas-relief du musée de Bayonne.
