A propos d’Abbès, par Jurg Kreienbuhl :#Il avait connu des jours meilleurs. Après avoir éprouvé la différence raciale lors d’un mariage avec une Danoise fortunée, il divorça et supporta mal ce nouvel état. De retour en France, il sombra rapidement dans la boisson. Sans papiers, sans argent, il s’était installé dans un tunnel sous une autoroute. À proximité se trouvait un foyer habité par des Sénégalais, balayeurs des rues. Abbès faisait leur vaisselle, nettoyait leur réfectoire et s’occupait de leur approvisionnement. En contrepartie, il pouvait se laver, et de temps à autre, les Sénégalais lui donnaient la pièce et les restes de leur repas à manger. Jamais, il ne mendiait. Il était fier ; malgré sa grande misère, il avait su conserver sa dignité d’homme.
