Description
Lettre autographe signée et datée, rédigée en réponse à l'invitation de Monsieur de Saint-Martin faite à Victor Hugo de participer aux cérémonies du Ve centenaire de la mort de Pétrarque, à Avignon et dans le Vaucluse; adresse et timbre. La lettre n'est pas abrupte, il expose durant trois pages son admiration pour la Provence (en profitant pour lancer une pique à la Marseillaise) et fait un véritable discours sur les œuvres comparées de Dante et Pétrarque. Cet exercice de style, relativement courant dans les salons littéraires d'alors, pourrait à lui seul servir de discours introductif aux cérémonies, si, au final, il n'affirmait la supériorité de Dante sur Pétrarque. La première partie est tout à la gloire de Pétrarque : Victor Hugo a admiré sa poésie et il démontre qu'il en sait sur elle au moins autant que les Félibres. Pétrarque, " Lumière de son temps " selon l'expression de Victor Hugo est pourtant éclipsé dans la seconde partie par Dante. Là, les arguments employés sont soit empreints de malhonnêteté intellectuelle, soit de méconnaissance de signification réelle des vers de Pétrarque. Quoiqu'en dise Victor Hugo, Pétrarque n'est pas un " poète heureux " !
