Description
Œuvre maîtresse de la collection du musée, ce précieux piano fut fabriqué en 1902 par la Maison française Erard, avec le concours du sculpteur Alexandre Charpentier et du peintre Albert Besnard. Il appartenait à la Baronne Malvina Vitta, qui choisit de le donner au musée des Beaux-Arts en 1946, en hommage à son défunt mari, le Baron Joseph Vitta. L’établissement doit en effet beaucoup à son action tenace et à ses donations. D'une manufacture exceptionnelle à plus d'un titre, le choix d’un bois exotique, l'ébène, renforce la somptuosité de la pièce. Le décor sculpté évoque les formes organiques végétales de l'Art Nouveau, tandis que la frise courant sur la caisse illustre des scènes symbolistes sur le thème des âges de la vie. Enfin, le revers du couvercle du piano présente un fond laqué doré, sur lequel s'épanouit un nu féminin en extase, sublime allégorie de la Musique.
