Description
Incomplète, elle se présente sous la forme d'un petit étui losangique en alliage cuivreux, perforé de quatre orifices circulaires et comportant deux fentes latérales, un bouton terminal ainsi qu'une charnière témoignant de l'absence d'un élément. Souvent confondues avec des fioles à parfums ou des fibules, il faut attendre le début des années 1980 pour que ces objets soient reconnus comme accessoires de l'écriture antique. Cette boite permettait de sceller un envoi et d'en garantir son intégrité jusqu'au destinataire. Pour cela, une cordelette était lacée autour du paquet puis le noeud était introduit dans la boite. On remplissait ensuite cette dernière de cire dont une partie s'écoulait par les perforations ménagées dans le fond, permettant ainsi la fixation de la boîte sur son support. L'expéditeur n'avait pour finir qu'à signer l'envoi en imprimant, par exemple, un chaton de bague sur la cire encore chaude avant de refermer le couvercle. De cette manière, le cachet et le noeud étaient protégés assurant la confidentialité du document.
