Personnage créé par la femme de Jean de Brunhoff, Cécile. Son fils, Laurent, poursuivra son oeuvre après sa mort en 1937. L'histoire vante les mérites de la civilisation occidentale à l'époque de l'Exposition coloniale (1931). L'album connaît un grand succès en France, en Grande Bretagne et aux États-Unis. Traduit dans 27 langues, il est vendu dans 167 pays. L'auteur a réalisé le décor de la salle de jeux des enfants dans le paquebot Normandie lancé à la fin des années 30. Les dessins préparatoires de Laurent d Brunhoff sont entrés à la BNF en 2006. ; Album "Histoire de Babar le petit éléphant est le 1er album écrit par Jean De brunhoff. Dans la forêt, un petit éléphant est né. Il s'appelle Babar. Sa maman le regarde grandir tendrement jusqu'au jour terrible où un chasseur la tue. Babar se réfugie alors en ville où il est recueilli par la vieille dame. Mais Babar se languit de sa famille et de sa forêt, lorsqu'un beau jour surgissent ses deux cousins, Arthur et Céleste. Ils décident de reprendre le chemin de la forêt. De retour chez lui, Babar, couronné roi des éléphants, choisit Céleste comme reine : couronnement et mariage ne sont que le début des aventures de nos deux héros. Album illustré en couleurs, couverture cartonnée illustré en couleurs, dos toilé, 50 pages.
