Description
Grès à couverte beige et décors d'émaux polychromes ; brun de fer appliqué au pinceau. ; Ces deux plats en grès reposent sur un court pied et sont en grès à couverte beige avec des frises végétales stylisées peintes au brun de fer au revers. Elles présentent un décor couvrant de personnages chinois sur fond brun sur leur avers. Le premier plat montre trois personnages vêtus à la chinoise, l’un d’eux est visiblement un guerrier puisqu’il porte une épée au côté. Le deuxième représente deux personnages chinois également, un homme à la barbe hirsute et un autre torse nu appuyé sur un bâton et regardant un coq. ; Le style de représentation pourrait évoquer les livres illustrés de romans populaires chinois des XVIIe-XVIIIe siècles. Cette paire de plats met en avant le folklore populaire chinois et japonais, sans doute dans le cadre d’une commande exotique à destination d’une clientèle étrangère. Les pièces sont assez tardives dans leur style et dans leur facture, et doivent dater de la toute fin de l’époque Edo ou de l’époque Meiji (XIXe siècle). Certains exemples de céramiques de l’époque de Meiji, notamment issues des fours de Satsuma, étaient présentés dans les expositions universelles et les salons des arts et de l’industrie organisés en Europe. ; Peut-être s’agit-il de personnages d’un roman populaire chinois, Au Bord de l’Eau par exemple.
